My friend has had bypass surgery and to lose weight, he is following a high-protein, no-carbs diet. He has lost a lot of weight but is this bad for his heart in the longterm?

Usually high -protein diets are not known to cause any harmful consequences. However if the diet includes excessive intake of red meat and dairy products like cheese, it can put the person at risk for cardiovascular diseases. Low-fat dairy products and lean meats and non-oily fish are better options for a protein diet.
