Chronic shoulder pain can be due to a sporting injury resulting in a frozen shoulder or joint inflammation. Constant stress injuries to the same area can be due to poor flexibility, improper muscle balance, or muscle weakness from previous injuries. I would massage the area gently with peppermint oil or diclofenac gel and most importantly let it rest to ensure time for healing. Alternating hot and cold compresses is shown to be most effective in reducing any swelling and pain. Physiotherapy exercises that focus on stretching, strengthening and building endurance and mild stretching may help alleviate any stiffness and increase flexibility.
