Sesame Street has introduced a new muppet with autism - a girl called Julia. Do you think this will help more people (and children) understand the condition? Or is it too complicated a condition to be shown through a muppet? http://www.today.com/parents/sesame-street-introduces-first-character-a…

Even though 1 in 68 kids are diagnosed with autism, people are still confused about what it is. People often think that the child is badly behaved, which is not the case. Hopefully the Sesame Street show will help people understand. Definitely, I think, the children watching Sesame Street will be better able to identify with a similar child in their classroom and learn to be kind to them.

Making Autism a mainstream topic of conversation is good. It is important that autism is talked about and though I have not seen the actual video, I am comfortable that it is being made by people who understand autism. It is useful to educate not just parents but also children who are going to be interacting more and more with children with autism. I just hope the programme does not become a way of stereotyping people. But we will know when we actually see the video and how the programme progresses over time.
