A quick snapshot on how music is helpful for persons with Parkinson's Disease. And of course, it is enjoyable.

Haven’t we all enjoyed some form of music in our lives? We may all have different tastes in the types of music, but we do enjoy it.

Music can be beneficial for us in the following ways :

  1. When we sing we use the same muscles that we use when we are speaking. Thus singing regularly helps us develop clarity in speech and a good pitch, thus making it easier for people to understand you better, when you are talking.

  2. Singing also helps us improve our breathing.  This is does by increasing our range of exhalation & inhalation. Developing good breathing & exhalation is very beneficial to our overall body functions, as well as, specific functions like speech.

  3. Music Therapy may be done in various forms besides singing, & in one such way when we try to match up to the beats of a song with clapping or snapping or foot - tapping, we develop rhythm and coordination.

  4. Music also helps us to develop our focus and concentration when we are trying to match and move our hands/ feet to the beats of the music.

  5. Music helps us to utilize all of our brain parts together, i.e., the areas responsible for language, memory, concentration, creative expression, etc.

  6. Moreover, music in any form, whether we are listening to it, singing it, playing a musical instrument, moving the beats, helps us to relax, reduces negative emotions and produces positive emotions. This in turn keeps us motivated.
