Meaning
Vriksha is tree, asana is posture.
Thus this aasana reflects the shape of a tree

Benefits of Vrikshasana
1. Helps increase physical balance and coordination.
2. This asana balances the nervous system and develops control of the body.
3. Improves focus and concentration.
4. Makes legs supple and strengthens muscles of the leg, foot and ankle.
5. Vrikshasana is a synchronised effort of body and mind.
6. It is similar to the natural posture of a tree which helps to make the mind tranquil. This pose develops control of the body, deep relaxation and mental calmness so it is a good practice for hypertension.
The Posture
1. Stand with feet together, hands by the side of the body.
2. Hold the right ankle with the right hand and bring the sole of the foot to the left thigh in such a way that the heel is pressed against left groin.
3. Make sure that your right knee is aligned to the body and does not come forward beyond the line of the left thigh.
4. Join the palms in Namaskar Mudra in front of the chest. Start gradually stretching both hands above the head. Keep both elbows straight.
5. Stand firm on left leg and focus on any object in front of you.
6. Maintain the posture for some time with deep and slow breathing.
7. Repeat the procedure with the left leg.

This complete cycle could be repeated once.

Note
Modifications - Those unable to place the sole of the foot on the opposite thigh can place it instead on the opposite ankle or shin bone.

Contemplation
Take the following points into consideration during the practice of this asana:
1. Experience physical balance and mental focus while performing the asana.
2. The core interpretation of the asana is that just as the tree stands firm in storm and wind, so should one be equally balanced in life inspite of troubles.
3. One should develop firmness, stability, balance and harmony in life.
