A lack of sleep or feeling tired is one of the biggest challenges that Caregivers face. Often times we have to wake up at night to check on our loved one, or we have trouble falling asleep because our mind is preoccupied. What are some of your biggest sleep challenges as a Caregiver?

Communities

For better sleep when the mind is preoccupied

* eliminate sound and light distractions in your bedroom. Curtains drawn, lights from all devices and appliances masked
* avoid using smartphones at least an hour before going to bed
* listen to your favorite music in low volume and read for a short while
* grab power naps during the day even if for just a few minutes to recharge the body from the disturbed sleep during the night

A friend of mine is often sleep deprived because she is looking after her children and her parents. And she works as well. She looks so exhausted most of the time.

Each of us require varying durations of sleep to feel refreshed. A recent study found women need more sleep than men. Sleep routines are easy to advice and hard to stick to. They need diligent effort. The best bet is to work your body clock. Try restricting daytime sleeping to less than half an hour. If you did not get enough sleep the previous night try relaxation techniques that you can learn from professionals or meditation. In the night try to get a minimum of 4-5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. If you have commitments that don't allow for good sleep hygiene, try to squeeze in a minimum of 6 hours of sleep in every 24 hours and practice relaxation techniques. Also, it is good to take regular breaks from work and indulge in leisure activities. I advice atleast 3 hours of leisure every week that doesn't include catching up with friends and family.
