Personal data you give to us

‘Personal data’ means data, whether true or not, about an individual who can be identified:

  • from that data or
  • from that data and other information to which we have or are likely to have access

We collect personal data when you submit it to us, including when you register to join the community discussions, to load content on the site and to participate in surveys.

The mandatory personal data we collect is:

  • User category (for example, Patient/Friends and Family or Doctor
  • if you are in the Patient/Friends and Family category, a screen name that you nominate (this allows you to maintain your privacy when you participate in discussions)
  • Email address
  • Gender
  • Name
  • Country of residence

for the purpose of our users participating in forums on our website

We also ask optional questions, being:

  • Preferred language
  • Date of birth
  • City of residence
  • Street address and Phone number

for the purpose of understanding our user profiles and enabling us to offer any location-based value added services

We also give you the option of receiving email updates on all forum activities and/or of subscribing (free of charge) to our newsletter.

We carry out regular surveys to get feedback and understand how to serve you better; on behalf of our partners like life science companies, non-profits, hospitals and research organisations.  The surveys are optional and you can choose to not respond to them.  A survey will be one of two kinds: first, a survey where we de-identify the data that is shared with the above companies, and, second, a specific focus group survey.  If a survey is a specific focus group survey, we will clearly let you know before you participate in the survey.

User registration

The minimum information we need to register you as a user of our website is an email address, screen name, a password, name, gender and country of residence.  The other information helps us provide you with tailored content and localized value added services.  We will ask further questions on communities you want to join, if you want to subscribe to newsletters, and if you want to participate in surveys.  We recommend you answer those questions to enhance your participation in the community forums, sharing your experience and getting invited to participate in surveys.

If you are a patient we ask you to share information about your condition and you can choose the level you would like to share with us. If you are a caregiver, we also ask some medical information about the patients you care for. These will allow us to partner with the right type of organisations and like minded people and share latest information about dealing with those conditions so that you find the site useful and your experience on the site is enhanced.
