Meaning
Bhujanga means cobra. Asana is posture. This asana imitates the posture of a striking cobra.

Benefits

1. Bhujangasana improves and deepens breathing and helps relieve stress.

2. It keeps the spine supple and healthy. It helps correct the alignment of the spine.

3. It is beneficial for all abdominal organs, especially the liver, the pancreas and the kidneys.

4. It strengthens the arms and shoulders.

5. It tones the ovaries and the uterus and helps during menstruation and related disorders.

Contraindications

People suffering from hernia, peptic ulcer and intestinal tuberculosis should avoid this asana.

The Posture

1. Lie flat on the stomach with forehead resting on ground, legs placed together straight on the ground.

2. Place the palms of your hand flat on the floor under the shoulders. Position the arms so that the elbows point backwards and the arms touch the sides of the ribs.

3. Slowly inhale and raise your forehead and chest off the ground, till your navel, without pressing hands to the ground.

4. Breathe slowly and deeply while in this final position .

Contemplation

  • Focus on breathing correctly.
  • Be aware of the chest, the rib cage and the spinal cord.
  • This posture is very effective for correcting and improving breathing.
