What kind of footwear must diabetics wear? Are any footwear to be avoided altogether?

Diabetics must never walk around with bare feet even at home. They should wear loose fitted socks or slippers at home and close-covered shoes outdoors to prevent any accidental injuries to the foot. Shoes, however must be comfortable and not constricting so as to allow good blood circulation.

Diabetics are at risk of getting foot ulcers. Wearing properly fitting shoes can help to reduce the risk of ulcer. Avoid shoes with pointing toes, high heels or too flat sole. There should be enough space between big toe and tip of the shoe. Look for shoes that have soft sole. Shoes with laces or buckles make it is easy to adjust the shoe.
