Part 1: This is an important issue - finding the correct nurse is often not an easy task. A lot depends on the patients needs. If it is a patient with dementia, stroke, or another complex neurological illness, or someone that requires special needs such as changing a catheter, it will be important to look for a trained nurse that has established experience dealing with these kinds of cases. It is important to ask the doctor at the time of discharge about what will be the daily nursing needs.

Part 2: If there is no hospitalization and you are considering home nursing, if you can have a home care doctor or senior nurse visit, you can get a consultation on what some of the daily care needs for that patient. Then when calling nursing or home care agencies, you can explain the needs (preparing a list before calling an agency is helpful) and see if they can meet those requirements. Sometimes in India there is a trial and error period - you may have to spend a week or so testing things out

Part 3: It will be important to see if the nurse/attender has a good rapport with the patient and if the patient and the caregiver feel comfortable with things. Remember there will always be an adjustment period and it is important to be patient and aware at this time - it is good to have high expectations, but they should be reasonable and fair to the nurse, the patient, and the caregiver.

Part 4: For language, the most important thing is that the nurse should be able to easily communicate with the patient and caregiver. The top 3 things I look for in nursing care are (1) An agency/nurse that has been recommended by someone I know and trust. (2) The agency/nurse takes time to meet the family to see what the needs are and if they have someone who has experience managing this type of patient -references are important (3)They will supply replacement nurses on leave days/holiday time.
