In addition to the various treatment options, lifestyle changes are also recommended:

Diet: Having the right amount of iodine is important for thyroid hormone production. And too little is the most common cause of hypothyroid problems worldwide. But iodine supplementation is not the answer in Hashimoto’s disease. In fact, it worsens the condition. What you need is a healthy diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats to build strength. Eating three healthy meals and healthy snacks will keep up your energy level.

Regular exercise: Exercise can be very beneficial for improving immune function. In people with autoimmune disorders, like Hashimoto’s, the immune system has short circuited and attacks the thyroid as if it were a foreign invader. It is particularly important to do exercises that improve gut health and gastrointestinal immunity as 70 percent of  the immune system lives in the gut.

It is also very important not to overstrain yourself if your have Hashimoto’s. Excessive exercise will further strain the immune system. Choose an activity like walking, light weight-lifting, swimming or yoga. Speak to your doctor for more suggestions.
