Hepatitis in general terms is liver inflammation, which can be caused by viruses and other factors such as alcohol, drugs or genetic disorders. Below are the various types of hepatitis:
⦁ Hepatitis A – Hepatitis A virus is found in the feces of an infected person. It spreads through contaminated food and water. It resolves with time and does not cause chronic liver disease.
⦁ Hepatitis B – Hepatitis B spreads through infectious body fluids such as blood, semen or vaginal fluids. It can be transmitted to a baby from an infected mother. Hepatitis B virus can cause chronic liver disease, liver cancer and liver failure if not treated on time with antiviral medications. It can be prevented by vaccines.
⦁ Hepatitis C – It is transmitted through infected blood i.e., during blood transfusions. There is no vaccine available to treat Hepatitis C. It can be prevented by practicing good hygiene and avoiding sharing brushes, needles or razors.
⦁ Hepatitis D – It occurs only in people infected with hepatitis B. It can be prevented with hepatitis B vaccine. Dual infection can cause severe disease if not treated on time.
⦁ Hepatitis E – It is transmitted through the consumption of contaminated water or food. Hepatitis E is commonly observed during hepatitis outbreaks. Avoid drinking water from unhygienic sources. It is an acute type of hepatitis.
⦁ Autoimmune hepatitis – When the body’s immune system attacks liver cells, it can cause liver inflammation and damage. This is a chronic liver disease and can occur at any age. The exact cause is unknown, but people with diabetes, thyroid, celiac diseases and other autoimmune conditions are more affected.
⦁ Drug-induced hepatitis – Chronic use of certain medications such as pain and fever medicines, statins, certain antibiotics, and oral contraceptives can damage the liver and lead to chronic liver inflammation. Your healthcare provider can diagnose this condition and alter the medications.
⦁ Alcoholic hepatitis – heavy alcohol consumption can cause this condition. This can lead to liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver failure. Lifestyle modifications and stopping alcohol consumption completely can prevent the condition.
