I am 50 years old and have low haemoglobin (10.8). I have not been able to lose weight despite cutting calories drastically and doing mild exercise (daily brisk walking for 30 mins). Does anemia make weight loss difficult?

Aditi, you raise an interesting point. There is a preliminary study which indicates that waist circumference, body weight and BMI significantly reduced in patients after treatment compared to pre-treatment period. Moreover, HDL was increased and triglyceride was decreased significantly in after treatment compared to pre-treatment period. More detailed study has been recommended. Here is the abstract http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24770833

Thank you. That is very interesting. I am currently taking iron tablets and will check cholesterol and triglycerides after 2 months.

Low hemoglobin levels cause decreased oxygen carrying capacity of the blood, which is needed of an individual to raise their intensity of exercise. Eating very restricted amount of calories not only lowers one's metabolism (which is inevitably low in women around the age of 50), but also leads to multiple nutrient deficiencies like that of iron, b complex and others. All these may be collectively making it difficult for you to lose weight.
Hence, I would suggest you to eat a balanced diet with optimum calories and increased dietary iron and other nutrients to boost your metabolism and promote weight loss. This will enable you to increase your duration and intensity of your workout.
You may consider to seek help of a Registered Dietitian for a customised diet plan and assist you in the process.
