I like many other doctors advise diabetic patients to never give up their allopathy medication for ayurveda therapies. Ayurvedic medicines are not regulated by any FDA and may contain heavy metals. Also patients then tend to go untreated and unchecked until they end up with severe complications. Hence it's best to never start any alternative therapy without consulting your doctor first. Yoga as exercise can be helpful for patients.

I presume we are talking about Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), as Type 1 diabetes means complete deficiency of Insulin, and such patients need Insulin for survival. There is no complete cure for T2DM.But this doesnt mean that all patients with T2DM will need to take drugs (oral and/or injections) all their life. T2DM is a lifestyle disease. So the first treatment for it is a change in the lifestyle which includes changes in dietary habits and activities (daily exercise/walk). There would be patients who would present with symptoms of high glucose and would need medicines to bring glucose levels.Ayurvedic treatment is not regulated and we have read reports of liver/kidney damage due to them, particulary due to presence of heavy metals in them. Some formulations may have steroids which may do more harm than good. In later stages of T2DM, combination drug therapy may be needed. Medications do not affect the kidneys, persistent high glucose (uncontrolled diabetes) does.
