I would like to have a general list of medication that should be kept at home. For a family comprising a couple with two children and aged parents, what else would I need in my medicine shelf apart from cough syrup, bandaid and bandages, sterilized cotton, antiseptic lotion for cuts and bruises, calamine lotion for insect bites...

A basic medical kits should include paracetamol, anti-inflammatory pain killers, antacids, anti-histamines, hydrocortisone cream, antibiotic ointment, and a first-aid box with cotton swabs, alcohol wipes, antiseptic lotion, tweezers, bandages etc.

In addition I stock basic stomach medicines like Domstal (vomiting), Lomotil (loose motions), Norflox (stomach antibiotic) and anti-acid like Omezaprole.

In addition, I suggest an antibiotic eyedrops as ciprofloxacin, which can be used without risk of untoward effect in case of non specific redness of the eye - whether infective, allergic or inflammatory. An asthalin inhaler, to relieve laboured breathing, is helpful if some family member has allergy tendency.
