How safe is Stevia?  Which is the best form to consume it in ?  What are the side effects ?

Would love to hear about this from actual users and experts.

Thank You

Have been using stevia from many years but only in my tea/coffee . I haven't found any side effects. The taste is also better than other sweeteners.

Many thanks for your quick reply. Do you use dried leaves or in powder/tablet form ?

Can you also please comment why you do not use in other foods? I am looking for users' experience in using Stevia in sweets and general foods, as I take tea/coffee without sugar.

I use the powder form of stevia in tea/coffee and about other things I avoid making deserts as my husband is a diabetic from past 12yrs and I am over weight .

Stevia is a fairly new product to the market even though its probably been used traditionally for hundreds of years. As such, there are no long term studies on the possible long term effects. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did come up with what they deem as an acceptable daily intake of stevia and it is advised to limit its use to no more than 9 (table top sweetener packets). There are no safety concerns if the estimated daily intake is less than the 9 packets equivalent.
There are no 'best' forms to consume stevia. It is interesting to note that 'processed' stevia as a sweetener is general recognized as safe by the FDA. But the natural stevia leaf and crude stevia extracts are NOT considered safe and do not have FDA approval for use in food.
