Botox injections can be a great alternative for people with leaky or overactive bladders. Overactive bladder (OAB), is a condition where the nerves send wrong signals to the bladder at the wrong time, leading to a sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate (urinary incontinence).

"Anticholinergics is the main treatment option but their side effects, for example, dry mouth, constipation, and blurring of vision, are some of the reasons why patients stop treatment", said Dr. Colin Teo, head and senior consultant, Department of Urology, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

“Botox injections can be an alternative to pills for most patients” says Professor Peter Lim, consultant urologist, Urology, Andrology and Continence Centre, Gleneagles Hospital, and president of the Society for Continence, Singapore.  Patients will likely need repeat injections to keep their bladder symptoms under control.

In Singapore, Botox is approved by the Health Sciences Authority for the treatment of urinary incontinence due to neurogenic detrusor overactivity
