Shaurya Mehrotra,37 is an artist and a sculptor in his own right. He has his own studio as well. With loving encouragement from his parents, Shaurya, is a happy young man today, full of vim and raring to go. His father Anil Mehrotra pens for us what his typical day looks like.
Mornings in our house are a gentle affair—think slow-motion wakeups and sleepy grins. My 37-year-old son, with his Down syndrome magic, starts his day lazily, savoring every last second under the comforter. A few shouts and hugs do finally get him out of his bed. Having brushed his teeth his first question whilst sipping warm water is “What’s the plan” - simply meaning what interesting activity we are going to do beyond the normal routine. Once he is ready to tackle the world (or at least the bathroom), it's on to his favorite part of the morning: a long, luxurious bath. Seriously, if there were an Olympic event for bath enjoyment, he’d take the gold.
Post-bath, its breakfast time. He devours his favorite meal of the day with gusto, fueled by the promise of a creative day ahead. A quick call to the driver—yes, he runs his schedule like a boss—and he is off to his pottery studio. It is a half-hour journey where, no doubt, his mind is already spinning with ideas for his next masterpiece.
At the studio, it’s a mix of hesitance and brilliance. He often starts slowly, needing a nudge from Mom to dive into the creative process. But once he begins, its magic in the making. Whether it’s slab rolling, delicate coils, or crafting sculptures (his specialty), he pours his heart into it. By the time he is done, he has created something remarkable—his best piece of the day. And if you’re lucky, you might be treated to his “studio special”: a freshly made latte, crafted lovingly for Mom or guests, adding an extra touch of joy to the creative hub.
Come lunchtime, he is back home by 2:30 PM, where he dives into his meal with enthusiasm worthy of a gourmet. After lunch, he declares independence—sometimes it's a TinTin movie on his trusty iPad, other times, it's getting lost in the world of colors with his paints, crayons and pens.
As the evening rolls in, he is off cycling or walking, adding a dose of fitness to his daily routine. Then it is back home for a light dinner by 7:30 PM. But wait, the day doesn’t end there! Post-dinner, he loves heading out for a drive with his dad—a perfect way to wind down and share stories about the day.
Every day is a blend of routine, creativity, and his unique charm, leaving us inspired and endlessly entertained. He might move at his own pace but make no mistake—this world is better because of it.
