In recognition of Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7), Dr. Shital Patel reiterates the many benefits of breastfeeding babies.

Breastfeeding is known to be beneficial for not only the mother and child but for the society as a whole. It is the most natural and ideal way to feed babies. The World Health Organization recommends that mothers exclusive breastfeed (no other food or water, only breastmilk) for the first 6 months and then along with complementary foods till age 2 years and beyond.

For the Mother:

  1. Decreases risk of certain cancers such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer
  2. Lactation hormone oxytocin is  released, which  aids in returning the uterus to its pre-pregnancy size.
  3. Feeding also stimulates release of hormone prolactin which has a relaxing and calming effect.
  4. Reduces risk of post-partum haemorrhage.
  5. Delays the menstrual cycle, thus maintaining a healthy gap between childbirth and next conception.
  6. Some studies show that the emotional bonding that occurs during feeding is most crucial for developing love and security.
  7. More affordable than formula milk.
  8. Easy option during night time feeds and while travelling.
  9. More hygienic as mother’s milk is already sterile; and there are no bottles to wash or sterilize.
  10. Saves time and effort compared to formula feeding.
  11. Helps lose weight faster as calories burn up while feeding.
  12. Reduces risk of osteoporosis.

  4. Reduces chances of getting infections such as Otitis media and respiratory illnesses.
  5. Decreases incidence of constipation, vomiting and diarrhea.
  6. Is known to reduce possibility of getting Type 2 diabetes, childhood and adult obesity, high cholesterol and coronary heart diseases.
  7. Reduces blindness and visual impairment esp in premature babies.
  8. Signifiicantly reduces risk of SIDS(Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), especially if breastfed exclusively for 6 months.
  9. Increases effectiveness of vaccinations.
  10. Reduces risks of dental caries.
  11. Reduces incidence of asthma and allergies.
