Hemophilia or Haemophilia is a rare genetic blood disorder in which blood does not clot properly. It affects males more but there are females who also have hemophilia. It affects 1 in 5000 male births. Since it is an inherited condition, the best way to prevent this condition is to ensure that those with history of hemophilia go through pre-conception screening.

The various treatment approaches used for Hemophilia are:
- Replacement therapy – Missing clotting factors are replaced in the blood. Blood factor concentrates made from donated blood or Recombinant clotting factor (Lab made) are given via IV infusion. This therapy is used in severe Hemophilia cases to prevent bleeding episodes.
- Emicizumab (monoclonal antibody) is a drug approved for pediatric and adult patients. It helps in preventing bleeding episodes.
- Desmopressin – This hormone can stimulate the body to release more clotting factors.
- Pain management – It is crucial to manage pain and prevent bleeding episodes. Analgesics and topical gels are used based on severity of pain. Before using, any medication specialist’s consultation is mandatory as some medications can interfere with clotting factors.
- Anti-fibrinolytic – It prevents clots from breaking down and promotes clotting and healing.
- Physiotherapy – To prevent long-term damage and maintain joint health physiotherapy plays a very important role. Strength training, balance and coordination exercise, range of motion exercise and, hot and clot therapy are used based on the patient’s needs.
